The Franco-Soviet pact of 1935 is more than an instrument of security for France. It is also an instrument of power politics. But, this does not mean that France has shut the door on Great Britain and the U.S., trusting that the Soviet alliance will give it full security. On his return from Moscow, Soviet Union, French politician Charles De Gaulle made it clear that his government was now intent upon strengthening the ties with the West. Besides, France possesses a large colonial empire whose defense requires close collaboration with Great Britain and the U.S.
